BNL CURP Overhead

PROJECT DETAILS

EW Howell Construction Group has partnered with H2M architects + engineers for the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Critical Utility Revitalization Project (CURP).

This project consists of 17 utility packages that will revitalize and upgrade BNL’s existing major systems including steam, water, sanitary sewer, chilled water, and electrical systems.

A team commitment gathering was held to commemorate the award of the project and recognize the work put into the proposal process. All team members – EW Howell, H2M, Gordon L. Seaman, KSW Mechanical, Ramboll Engineering, and Carson Corporation – were in attendance.

As of late 2024, we received notice to proceed with construction on 12 of our 17 base contract utility tasks for the Critical Utilities Revitalization Project (CURP). We are in design development on the remainder of the utility tasks planned for completion by the end of the year.

We completed the first utility task: removing and replacing multiple underground water valves for BNL’s main campus water supply. This work took shutdown coordination with BNL Campus water facilities personnel as it shut down water to multiple buildings while work was in progress. EW Howell is currently under construction of the following UTs:

Utility Task 6/16 – These utility tasks replace the main steam manholes and steam piping outside the steam facility plant since the existing 40+ year-old steam system has deteriorated to almost unusable. This work started in June 2024 and is to be completed in October 2024, so the BNL campus facility will be heated during winter.

Utility Task 3 – This utility task provides a new 15 kV feeder consisting of 2 sets of paralleled 750 kcmil cable from Substation 603 (B603) to the Central Chilled Water Facility (B600). The project scope is phased into two phases; currently, We are working on Phase 1, which is the installation of all the electrical duct banks and manholes. Upon completion, the cable wire will be measured and ordered and currently has a 1-year fabrication lead time. Phase 2 of the project is to install all cables and switchgears and is planned to start in Fall 2025 and be completed by the end of 2025.

Our design build effort continues with our trade contractors and design partners in order to maintain project advancement.
