THE DALTON SCHOOL

PROJECT DETAILS
The Dalton High School and Middle School are located at 108-114 East 89th Street in a 12-story, 104,000-square-foot facility. This project consisted of the construction of a new 2-story rooftop expansion. The focus of the expansion is the school’s new and improved STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). New elements include a robotics laboratory, maker space, project room, engineering classroom, engineering offices, teaching kitchen, greenhouse, architecture/media arts, high school classrooms, restrooms, multi-purpose space, and structural reinforcement.
The master plan organizes the building into three programmatic groups. The Interdisciplinary Hub, located atop the STEAM Center, is designed to promote dialogue and collaboration. The Academic Core, the mid-section of the building, is the hive of instructional space for both middle and high school students. At the base, the Student Resources section includes the relocated library and a renovated lobby, with enhanced security, along with informal meeting spaces, the cafeteria, a theater, and music rooms.
The Dalton School is an independent co-educational day school serving approximately 1,300 students from grades kindergarten through twelve. In 1929, construction of the 89th Street Building was completed, and it has since been continuously used as a school by Dalton.
