PS 49

PROJECT DETAILS
PS 49 is located in the center of Middle Village, Queens and has been an important staple in the community for generations. EW Howell Construction Group was responsible for the 25,865-square-foot new addition to the current school building as well as renovations to the existing building.
This addition, which is connected to the current main lobby, accommodates 13 regular classrooms, 2 special education classrooms, 3 resource rooms, a medical suite, an exercise room, and an expanded cafeteria. The school’s play yard was resurfaced as well. The addition features a partial basement, concrete foundation walls and footings, a structural steel frame, brick and masonry exterior walls, and a glass-and-aluminum curtain wall section.
Designed by Ciardullo Architects, PS 49 kept its historic 1920s look and it has been listed as a designated site by the NYS Historic Preservation Office due to its beautiful brick work and limestone facades. The school is located next to Juniper Valley Park. The project consisted of a 25,865-square-foot ‘L’ Shape addition to the outdoor area, allowing extra space for outdoor playgrounds, and beautiful landscaped views of the park, as well as the interior renovation and exterior restoration.
